Charles and Camilla

commissioned by BBC Radio Five Live on the occasion
of the Royal Wedding

Some of us come here to court
To offer blessings and support
A few arrive to criticise
The forging of longstanding ties
With claims our doting couples' sins are
Demeaning to the House of Windsor…

We've read about this great divide
And whether she should be his bride
So much that it begins to bore
When everyone has grabbed an oar
And stuck it in and then we hear
The politicians loudly cheer
With fondest wishes and affection
In this, the run up to election

A love that's lingered in seclusion
Survived the harshest of intrusion
Exposure neither could have dreamed
So many times it must have seemed
Far easier to walk away
And yet we find them here today
In triumph as a journey ends
Where soul mates, lovers and best friends
Unite for good and not in sin
But how did this long tale begin?

They first met at a game of polo
When both were young and free and solo
The future king, a winning catch
Appeared to make the perfect match
Discovering a disposition
That echoed family tradition
But duty though a noble thing
Can blunt the shock of Cupid's sting
And royal training oft endorses
A grounding in one's own armed forces
Which consequently meant that he
Would spend long stints away at sea

So maybe they fell out of touch
Perhaps the distance was too much
The complications just too great
It's left for us to speculate
Instead the young Miss Shand enrols
As Mrs Andrew Parker-Bowles
No doubt attempting to forget
The sweet and gentle prince she'd met

Whichever way, one thing is sure
We seldom chose those we adore
Nor can we help the way we feel
True love's a wound that doesn't heal
While hidden, thwarted and repressed
Yet equally time cannot best
Such fires, and so they only smoulder
Burn deeper as the heart grows older

Indeed this was no mere scintilla
The feelings Charles holds for Camilla
He's harboured all his adult life
And now that she can be his wife
Let's put aside their troubled past
And share this happiness at last
For both of them have done their time
Despite the fact that love's no crime
And is for all of us, quite vital
Transcending race and creed and title

While seldom real in fairy tales
Camilla and the Prince of Wales
Have found it, so we celebrate
A wedding clearly worth the wait
And wish should wonders never cease
The privacy, the joy and peace
That they have so far been denied
For Charles and his devoted bride!
